Feasibility of implementing group well baby/well woman dyad care at federally qualified health centers.
The aim of this qualitative study was to assess stakeholder perspectives on the feasibility of implementing Centering Parenting (CP) in federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in Baltimore. The investigators concluded that perceptions regarding facilitators and barriers to CP implementation in FQHCs were similar to existing group well-child care literature; however the benefit of emphasis on maternal wellness was a unique finding. The investigators suggested that a maternal wellness integration might make CP a particularly desirable model for implementation at FQHCs, but potential systems barriers must be addressed.

Evaluation of a multimodal, direct-to-patient educational intervention targeting barriers to osteoporosis care: a randomized clinical trial.
Osteoporosis treatment rates are declining, even among those with past fractures. Novel, low-cost approaches are needed to improve osteoporosis care. In this study, the investigators conducted a parallel group, controlled, randomized clinical trial evaluating a behavioral intervention for improving osteoporosis medication use. They found that the primary study outcome was self-report of osteoporosis medication use at 6 months. Other outcomes included calcium and vitamin D supplementation, bone mineral density (BMD) testing, readiness for behavioral change, and barriers to treatment.

Leveraging EHRs for patient engagement: perspectives on tailored program outreach.
Electronic health records (EHRs) present healthcare delivery systems with scalable, cost-effective opportunities to promote lifestyle programs among patients at high risk for type 2 diabetes, yet little consensus exists on strategies to enhance patient engagement. In this study, the investigators explored patient perspectives on program outreach messages containing content tailored to EHR-derived diabetes risk factors--a theory-driven strategy to increase the persuasiveness of health communications.

Reference pricing changes the 'choice architecture' of health care for consumers.
This article summarizes reference pricing's impacts to date on patient choice, provider prices, surgical complications, and employer spending and estimates its potential impacts if expanded to more services and a broader population. Reference pricing induces consumers to select lower-price alternatives for all of the forms of care studied, leading to significant reductions in prices paid and spending incurred by insurers and employers.

A content analysis of self-reported barriers and facilitators to preventing postpartum smoking relapse among a sample of current and former smokers in an underserved population.
The researchers conducted in-person interviews to characterize the barriers and facilitators that prevent postpartum relapse and maintain smoking abstinence among a socioeconomically underserved population. They found that participants reported four main strategies that helped them to successfully cope with postpartum cravings and relapses, including being informed of smoking risks, maintaining goal-oriented thoughts, focusing on their concerns about the baby's health, and receiving positive social support from families and friends.

A proposed 'health literate care model' would constitute a systems approach to improving patients' engagement in care.
The researchers proposed a Health Literate Care Model that would weave health literacy strategies into the widely adopted Care Model (formerly known as the Chronic Care Model). Their new model calls for approaching all patients with the assumption that they are at risk of not understanding their health conditions or how to deal with them, and then confirming and ensuring patients' understanding. They suggested that health literacy would then become an organizational value infused into all aspects of planning and operations. They also proposed a measurement framework to track the impact of the new Health Literate Care Model on patient outcomes and quality of care.
