Evaluating the implementation of a before-school physical activity program: a mixed-methods approach in Massachusetts, 2018.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a widely available, before-school, physical activity program in a low-resource, racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, urban school setting to identify adaptations needed for successful implementation. The investigators used a collaborative effort with stakeholders to implement the Build Our Kids' Success (BOKS) program in 3 schools in Revere, Massachusetts.

Development of a neighborhood walkability index for studying neighborhood physical activity contexts in communities across the U.S. over the past three decades.
To examine how urban form shapes physical activity and health over time, a measure of neighborhood walkability is needed that can be linked to cohort studies with participants living across the United States (U.S.) that have been followed over the past decades. In this study, the Built Environment and Health-Neighborhood Walkability Index (BEH-NWI), a measure of neighborhood walkability that can be calculated for communities across the United States between 1990 and 2015, was conceptualized, developed, and tested using data from the New York City Tri-State Area.

Nativity and occupational determinants of physical activity participation among Latinos.
This study examined associations of race/ethnicity; nativity; and leisure-time, transportation, and occupation-related physical activity among Latino and non-Latino white adults. Using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey self-reported data, results showed variability in the relationship between nativity and the physical activity domain Latinos engage in compared with non-Latino whites, with occupation contributing substantially to meeting physical activity recommendations for all population groups.

Sociodemographic patterns of chronic disease: how the mid-south region compares to the rest of the country.
This descriptive study examines sociodemographic differences in the distribution of chronic diseases and health-related behaviors in the Mid-South versus the rest of the U.S., identifying subgroups at increased risk of chronic disease. It finds that the Mid-South population had increased rates of chronic disease and worse health-related behaviors than the rest of the U.S. Mid-South blacks had the highest percentages of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke of all subgroups.

The social determinants of chronic disease.
This review article addresses the concept of the social determinants of health (SDH), selected theories, and its application in studies of chronic disease. The health effects of SDH are initially discussed with respect to smoking and the social gradient in mortality. The article concludes with an examination of neighborhood disadvantage, social networks, and perceived discrimination in SDH research.

Family behaviors and type 2 diabetes: what to target and how to address in interventions for adults with low socioeconomic status.
The researchers studied adults with type 2 diabetes at a Federally Qualified Health Center to better understand experiences with diabetes-specific family behaviors and willingness to engage family members in diabetes interventions. They found that some participants (40 percent) said engaging family in interventions would positively affect all members; others (27 percent) did not want to involve family.

Associations of individual characteristics and lifestyle factors with metabolism of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate in NHANES 2001-2012.
The authors examined associations of several individual characteristics and lifestyle factors with the ratio of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate to mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHP:MEHHP) and %MEHP (the ratio of MEHP to the sum of the secondary metabolites). They found that non-Caucasian individuals had higher %MEHP, that age was inversely associated, that overweight individuals had lower MEHP:MEHHP, and that alcohol consumption was inversely associated with %MEHP among men. They concluded that individual and lifestyle characteristics are associated with differences in DEHP metabolism.

Effects of proximity to supermarkets on a randomized trial studying interventions for obesity.
To determine whether proximity to a supermarket modified the effects of an obesity intervention, the researchers examined distance to the closest supermarket as an effect modifier. They concluded that living closer to a supermarket is associated with greater improvements in fruit and vegetable intake and weight status in an obesity intervention.

Experiences with food insecurity and risky sex among low-income people living with HIV/AIDS in a resource-rich setting.
The researchers investigated the perceived effects of food insecurity on risky sexual behaviors among a population of low-income people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in San Francisco and Alameda County, California. Their study demonstrated that food insecurity contributes to transactional and unprotected sex among urban poor individuals in a resource-rich setting, including among men who have sex with men.

Race, social and environmental conditions, and health behaviors in men.
The investigators examined the nature of disparities in health behaviors among African American and white men in the Exploring Health Disparities in Integrated Communities Study-Southwest Baltimore to data from the 2003 National Health Interview Survey. They found that race disparities in physical activity, drinking, and smoking were ameliorated where African American and white men were living under similar social, environmental, and socioeconomic status conditions, suggesting that social environment may be an important determinant of health behaviors among African American and white men.

Factors that influence physical function and emotional well-being among Medicare-Medicaid enrollees.
The researchers examined the associations between race, gender, age, neighborhood poverty, education, and health behaviors (i.e., smoking, exercise, and physical activity) with physical function and emotional well-being in Medicare-Medicaid enrollees. They determined that race, neighborhood poverty, education, and income did not influence physical function or emotional well-being; however, physical activity was associated both with an increased self-report of physical function and emotional well-being.

Heterogeneity in the smoking response to health shocks by out-of-pocket spending risk.
Using longitudinal data from 11 European countries, the researchers investigated the impact of a new cardiovascular (CV) health shock on smoking decisions among older adults and examine whether personal exposure to medical spending risk influences the smoking response. They found that CV shocks impact the propensity to smoke, with relatively more impact among individuals with high financial risk exposure to medical spending.
