Head Start's role in addressing food and nutrition insecurity: focus group findings.
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of Head Start (HS) families' and employees' on family experiences with food and nutrition insecurity (FNI) and determine if and how HS addresses them. From August 2021 to January 2022, the researchers conducted 4 virtual focus groups with 27 HS employee and family participants. The study found that when addressing multilevel factors affecting FNI, HS's 2-generational method is useful for families. It was also determined that the role of the family advocate is critical. Finally, in addition to improving access to nutritious foods, skills and education to decrease generational unhealthy behaviors should be emphasized.

Ultra-processed food consumption and BMI-Z among children at risk for obesity from low-income households.
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between baseline ultra-processed food consumption in early childhood and child BMI Z-score over 36 months. Among 595 children, median baseline age was 4.3 years, 65.4% had normal weight, 33.8% were overweight, and 0.8% were obese. When compared with low ultra-processed consumption (300 kcals/day), High ultra-processed intake (1300 kcals/day) was related with a 1.2 higher BMI-Z at 36 months for 3-year-olds and a 0.6 higher BMI-Z for 4-year-olds. The difference was not statistically significant for 5-year-olds or overall.

SNAP participation and emergency department use.
The objectives of this study were to examine whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation is associated with emergency department use among low-income children, and whether any such association is mediated by household food hardship and child health status and/or moderated by special health care needs (SHCN) status. Researched pooled cross-sectional samples of children in low-income households from 2016-19 National Survey of Children's Health. SNAP participation was found to be associated with lower likelihoods of emergency department use. The researchers concluded that food hardship relief may improve outcomes for vulnerable children as well as the health systems that serve them.

Pharmacologic and dietary treatments for epilepsies in children aged 1-36 months: a systematic review.
The purpose of this systematic review study was to assess the effectiveness and harms of pharmacologic and dietary treatments for epilepsy in children aged 1-36 months without infantile spasms. The researchers searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for studies published from 1/1/1999 to 8/19/21 to identify studies reporting data on children aged 1-36 months receiving pharmacologic or dietary treatments for epilepsy. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. The study found that Levetiracetam leads to seizure freedom in some infants but the data on 6 other medications (lamotrigine, phenytoin, rufinamide, stiripentol, topiramate, and vigabatrin) were too limited to allow conclusions about their effectiveness. Three medications (lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and topiramate) were rarely discontinued due to adverse effects, and severe events were also rare. In the category of diets, the ketogenic diet lead to seizure freedom in some infants and both the ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet reduced average seizure frequency.

Maternal, infant, and child health outcomes associated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children: a systematic review.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether WIC participation was associated with improved maternal, neonatal-birth, and infant-child health outcomes or differences in outcomes by subgroups and WIC enrollment duration. Findings showed moderate strength of evidence (SOE) that maternal WIC participation during pregnancy is likely associated with lower risk for preterm birth, low birthweight infants, and infant mortality; low SOE that maternal WIC participation may be associated with a lower likelihood of inadequate gestational weight gain, as well as increased well-child visits and childhood immunizations; and low SOE that child WIC participation may be associated with increased childhood immunizations. Further, findings showed low SOE for differences in some outcomes by race and ethnicity but insufficient evidence for differences by WIC enrollment duration.

Dietary risk factors for pediatric kidney stones: a case-control study.
This study’s objective was to perform a case-control study of the association of dietary nutrients with pediatric urolithiasis. Researchers obtained dietary information from pediatric urolithiasis patients and healthy controls; survey results were converted to standard nutrient intakes. Findings showed that higher dietary intake of calcium, sodium, and beta carotene, and lower potassium intake were associated with pediatric urolithiasis.

Exploring the gap: food insecurity and resource engagement.
Researchers investigated participant interest in referral and engagement with resources provided by pediatric health care institutions implementing food insecurity (FI) screens. They found that, through hospital-community partnership in an initial attempt to screen and offer direct-referral for FI, they elicited considerable interest among families for connection to resource agencies. However, there was a substantial gap between referral acceptance and ultimate connection with the resource agency.

Household food insufficiency, health status and emergency healthcare utilisation among children with and without special healthcare needs.
The purpose of this study was to compare exposure to household food insufficiency and the relationship between household food insufficiency and both health status and emergency healthcare utilization among children with and without special healthcare needs (SHCN). The investigators concluded that compared with other children, children with SHCN have an elevated risk of exposure to household food insufficiency and experiencing greater reductions in health status when exposed.

Child social media influencers and unhealthy food product placement.
The goal of this study was to determine the frequency with which kid influencers promote branded and unbranded food and drinks during their YouTube videos and assess the nutritional quality of food and drinks shown. The researchers found that most food and/or drinks were unhealthy branded items, followed by unhealthy unbranded items, healthy unbranded items, and healthy branded items. They concluded that kid influencers generate millions of impressions for unhealthy food and drink brands through product placement and recommended that the Federal Trade Commission strengthen regulations regarding product placement on YouTube videos featuring young children.

Examining the relationship between youth-targeted food marketing expenditures and the demographics of social media followers.
The purpose of this study was to determine how many adolescents follow food/beverage brands on Instagram and Twitter, and examine associations between brands' youth-targeted marketing practices and percentages of adolescent followers. The investigators purchased data from Demographics Pro to characterize the demographics of Twitter and Instagram users who followed 27 of the most highly advertised fast food, snack, and drink brands in 2019. They found that food and sugary drink brands maintain millions of adolescent followers on social media.

Food for thought: a randomized trial of food insecurity screening in the emergency department.
Despite the growing interest in screening for food insecurity in the clinical setting, little evidence exists regarding screening formats that maximize disclosure and caregiver comfort. In this randomized trial, investigators asked English-speaking adult caregivers of pediatric patients in the emergency department at an urban, freestanding children's hospital to complete a validated, 2-question screen for food insecurity. Although both verbal interview and tablet-based screening modalities were effective in identifying food insecurity, tablet-based screening had a higher disclosure rate and was the participants' preferred screening method.

Feeding methods for infants with single ventricle physiology are associated with length of stay during stage 2 surgery hospitalization.
The purpose of this paper was to identify types of feeding methods following stage 2 palliation and their influence on length of stay. Results showed that feeding methods established at admission for stage 2 palliation are not likely to change by discharge, and that length of stay is more likely to be impacted by tube feeding and intubation history than by age or weight-for-age z score at admission. Recommendations included a better understanding for selection of feeding methods and their impact on patient outcomes in order to develop evidence-based guidelines to decrease variability in clinical practice patterns and to provide appropriate counseling to caregivers.

The impact of 1 year of healthier school food policies on students' diets during and outside of the school day.
In 2012, Massachusetts implemented both the updated national school meal standards and comprehensive competitive food/beverage standards that closely align with current national requirements for school snacks. This study examines the impact of these combined standards on school meal and snack food selections, as well as food choices outside of school. The investigators concluded that with the reduction in the number of unhealthy school snacks, significantly more students selected school meals. Students did not compensate for lack of unhealthy snacks in school by increased consumption of unhealthy snacks outside of school.

Associations between enteral nutrition and acute respiratory infection among patients in New York metropolitan region pediatric long-term care facilities.
This study investigated the outcomes of children and a subsample of infants in pediatric long-term care facilities are need enteral nutrition (EN). Those patients who need EN had a higher risk of acute pediatric infection (ARI) and a lower odds of discharge than those who did not. Infants had a particular higher risk of comorbidities and infections when they were fed using percutaneous feeding tubes.

Determinants of binge eating symptoms in children with overweight/obesity.
In this study, the investigators examined the prevalence and multilevel determinants of three binge eating symptoms: (1) sneaking, hiding, or hoarding food; (2) eating in the absence of hunger, and (3) inhibition or embarrassment when eating in front of others among 817 children aged 5-12 years old with overweight/obesity receiving primary care in eastern Massachusetts. They examined the associations of child and parent/household characteristics with the prevalence ratios (PRs) of these three binge eating symptoms.

Differences in the neighborhood retail food environment and obesity among US children and adolescents by SNAP participation.
The authors sought to understand the association between children's neighborhood food access and overweight/obesity in a national sample of US households, and whether this association differs by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation or household purchases. Using data from the National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey, 2012-2013, they found that the odds of childhood overweight/obesity were higher with greater access to combination grocery/other stores overall and for children in SNAP. Eligible non-SNAP children had higher odds of overweight/obesity with greater access to convenience stores. The average child lived in a household with 6.3% of total spending at food outlets on sugary beverages. They concluded that greater neighborhood access to combination grocery/other stores is associated with higher obesity prevalence for children overall and those in SNAP.

Rationale and design of the Clinic and Community Approaches to Healthy Weight Randomized Trial.
Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of family-centered, pediatric weight management programs in reducing childhood obesity. Yet, programs to optimize the care of low-income children with obesity are needed. The investigators sought to examine the comparative effectiveness of two, potentially scalable pediatric weight management programs delivered to low-income children in a clinical or community setting.

Product reformulation and nutritional improvements after new competitive food standards in schools.
In 2012, Massachusetts enacted school competitive food and beverage standards similar to national Smart Snacks. These standards aim to improve the nutritional quality of competitive snacks. This study assessed whether products were reformulated after standards were implemented; the availability of reformulated products outside schools; and whether compliance with the standards improved the nutrient composition of competitive snacks. The investigators concluded that Massachusetts' law was effective in improving the nutritional content of snacks and product reformulation helped schools adhere to the law.

Preliminary development of the food allergy coping and emotions questionnaires for children, adolescents, and young people: qualitative analysis of data on IgE-mediated food allergy from five countries.
This study examined the use of a food allergy-specific development model that explained emotions and coping styles to children aged 6 to 15 years in Ireland in other countries. The Food Allergy Coping and Emotions (FACE) model was used with 274 participants aged 6 to 23 years and 119 parents in Australia, Ireland, Italy, the UK, and the US. The model has 5 major themes which were present across all the countries. The results will be used to generate an age-specific bank of items for the development of 3 questionnaires to assess emotions and coping in food allergy.

Beyond the dinner table: who's having breakfast, lunch and dinner family meals and which meals are associated with better diet quality and BMI in pre-school children?.
This study examined the frequency of eating breakfast, lunch or dinner family meals and associations with pre-school children's overall diet quality and BMI percentile. The authors concluded that breakfast family meal frequency and total weekly family meal frequency were associated with healthier diet quality in non-Hispanic pre-school children but not in Hispanic children. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the association between family meal type and child diet quality and BMI percentile.

Knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians.
In this study, investigators examined knowledge of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome among general pediatricians. They created a 32-question survey, collecting information regarding participants’ experience with FPIES and knowledge of FPIES diagnosis and management. Investigators found that many pediatricians had a basic but incomplete understanding of FPIES diagnosis and initial management.

Perceived barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and school lunch meals among adolescents: a qualitative study.
The researchers explored how perceived barriers and facilitators influence healthy eating and investigated the acceptability of changes to school lunch meals among adolescents after implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Milk options observation (MOO): a mixed-methods study of chocolate milk removal on beverage consumption and student/staff behaviors in a rural elementary school.
The researchers conducted a study of flavored milk removal at a rural primary school between May and June 2012. They measured beverage selection/consumption pre- and post-chocolate milk removal and collected observation field notes. Their conclusion was that removing flavored milk from school-provided lunches may lower students' daily added sugar consumption without considerably decreasing calcium and protein intake and may promote healthy weight.
