Patient and family engagement strategies for children and adolescents with chronic diseases: a review of systematic reviews.
Patient and family engagement is important for family-centered care, particularly for children and adolescents with chronic disease. In this study the investigators aimed to 1) identify available evidence from systematic reviews on engagement strategies used to help children, adolescents, and their caregivers manage chronic conditions, and 2) identify gaps in the literature. They searched PubMed and CINAHL from January 2015 to January 2020 for systematic reviews on patient and family engagement strategies in the pediatrics population (<18 years).

Mobile-enhanced peer support for African Americans with Type 2 diabetes: a randomized controlled trial.
This study compared the effectiveness of a community-based diabetes self-management education (DSME) plus mobile health (mHealth)-enhanced peer support intervention to community-based DSME alone for African American adults with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. This randomized controlled trial took place in Jefferson County, Alabama within a safety-net healthcare system with a group diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hemoglobin A1C ≥ 7.5%. The intervention group reviewed community-based DSME plus 6 months of mHealth-enhanced peer support, including 12 weekly phone calls, then 3 monthly calls from community health workers. The control group received community based DSME only. Primary outcomes were lower A1C and secondary outcomes were lower diabetes distress, depressive symptoms, self-efficacy or confidence in their ability to manage diabetes, and social support. Of 120 participants selected, 97 completed the study. Both groups experienced clinical meaning reduction in A1C. Participants in the intervention group experienced a significantly larger reduction in diabetes distress compared to the control group.

Comparison of functional benefits of self-management training for amputees under virtual world and e-learning conditions.
This project used a randomized design to compare two methods of disseminating an evidence-based self-management intervention for amputees, which included, avatar-based virtual world and e-learning environments. The investigators found that the virtual world group had a significantly higher dropout rate than the e-learning group.

Physicians' views of self-monitoring of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes not on insulin.
This qualitative study examines to what extent and why physicians still prescribe self-monitoring of blood glucose in patients with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes when the evidence shows it increases cost without improving hemoglobin A1c, general well-being, or health-related quality of life.

Rapid evidence review of mobile applications for self-management of diabetes.
The study authors conducted a rapid evidence review to examine features, clinical efficacy, and usability of apps for self-management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults. The investigators found limited evidence suggesting that use of some commercially available apps, when combined with additional support from a healthcare provider or study staff, may improve some short-term diabetes-related outcomes. The impact of these apps on longer-term outcomes was unclear.

Epinephrine autoinjectors: new data, new problems.
This paper reviews new data, and new problems in recently published literature on epinephrine autoinjectors. The authors emphasize that existing gaps in anaphylaxis management remain unaddressed. Patient needs are largely unmet, and very few studies are being designed to clarify and instill best practice, and to determine how to increase adherence to existing anaphylaxis guidelines through integrated knowledge translation strategies.

Translating evidence-based protocols into the home healthcare setting.
A comparative effectiveness study was undertaken at a large urban home care agency to examine an evidence-based pain self-management program delivered by physical therapists (PTs). This article focuses on PT training, methods implemented to reinforce content after training and to encourage uptake of the program with appropriate patients, and therapists' fidelity to the program.

Planning for action: the impact of an asthma action plan decision support tool integrated into an electronic health record (EHR) at a large health care system.
This project aimed to embed an electronic asthma action plan decision support tool (eAAP) into the medical record to streamline evidence-based guidelines for providers at the point of care, create individualized patient handouts, and evaluate effects on disease outcomes. Its findings supports existing evidence that patient self-management plays an important role in reducing asthma exacerbations.
